Bamenda central prison Cameroon: GLIVA Commemorates International Day For Older Persons, Screens Inmates On Communicable Diseases

The Green Light Vision Association with the acronym GLIVA has screened 37 elderly inmates both men and women on HIV, hepatitis B, and C, the most common communicable diseases. The outing of GLIVA on Friday, October 18, 2024, to the principal prison in Bamenda, Chief Town of the Northwest Region of Cameroon, is in commemoration of the International Day For Older Persons. The Chief Executive Officer of GLIVA, Leku Fabrice, and his team engaged the elderly inmates with health talks. The sensitization session ended with conducting preliminary controls before the collection of specimens to be analyzed at the Leku Diagnostic Center, an accompanying health facility to GLIVA. “Given that the Bamenda Central Prison plays host to people from diverse backgrounds, we thought it wise to step in and get them screened on common communicable diseases and create awareness on breast cancer.” Attest Leku Fabrice, the Founder and CEO of Green Light Vision Association. After The Collection Of Samples What Next? “The samples collected will be carried to our partner health institution, Leku Diagnostic Center, which is situated at Nitop 1, a neighborhood in Bamenda. At the center, HIV, Hepatitis B, and C tests will be conducted on them. This implies that we will have a second visit to make to the prison to communicate the results. What if some are tested positive? “For those that will test positive, to begin with, a person’s medical report is its privacy and we must respect that even with the inmates. We are going to educate those positive on how to control their situations. And for the negative cases, they will equally be schooled on best practices to remain healthy. It is worth noting that hepatitis B has a vaccine to prevent it. But at our level now, we are unable to bring such to the inmates because of a lack of funds. Funding is our major challenge. For instance, the hepatitis B vaccine is 5000 FCFA and one person has to be administered three doses. Attempt a calculation of the amount multiplied by three and the number of inmates screened today, you will see that it is a huge sum there. The Inmates will only benefit such in the nearest future when funders will step in to push forward our mission.” In as much as we cannot provide vaccines for those who will test negative for hepatitis B, they must know some of the best habits to remain healthy. And having them have good practices while being in prison is optimal for the prevention of Communicable Diseases.
